Mido was founded in 1918 by George G. Schaeren in Biel, Switzerland. The word “mido” comes from a Latin term which means “measuring”. In 1934 the brand unveiled the Multifort which was one of the first watch to have a self-winding movement. The watch was also shock-resistant, anti-magnetic and water-resistant. The brand is also famous for its unbreakable springs. In 1945 the brand introduced a center chronograph which looked like a classic 3-hand watch but with two pushbuttons on the side of the case. Mido introduced the commander model in 1959 which was a single shell watch. This innovation improved the life span of watches. A few years later, in 1970, the brand unveiled the Aquadura Crown Sealing system. This system used a natural cork to seal the crown in order to ensure the water resistance of the watch. In the 1990’s, Mido introduced the Mido World Timer, a GMT watch. The World Timer could display the local time of any part of the world by bringing any city to the 12 o’clock position and then pressing the crown. Mido now belongs to the Swatch Group.
