Lip was founded by Emmanuel Lipmann in 1867. At that time the brand has only a watchmaking workshop. Emmanuel’s children took over the company after his death and Ernest, one of his sons, asked Pierre and Marie Curie to find a material that could be read in the dark. Pierre and Marie Curie discovered radium in 1898 and created the first phosphorescent dials. In 1908 the Lip mark was filed and the dials were struck with “LIP”. In 1935, Lip manufactured a small series of Type 10 wristwatches which would equip Jean Mermoz’s outstanding trip. In 1952 Fred Lip presented the first electric watch, the “Electronic”. In 1954 the company had 1,500 employees and produced 300,000 watches a year. In 1967 Lip launched the famous Nautic-Ski, a 200 metres water-resistant watch with a rotating bezel under the glass. The Nautic-Ski is still today an icon. In 2001 Lip reissued the Type 10 aeronautical watches. In 2003 Lip launched the Mythic collection as an avant-garde collection. Today Lip produces quartz and mechanical watches which pay tribute to Lip vintage watches (especially those from the 60’s and the 70’s).
