Tiffany & Co. was founded in New York City in 1837. Tiffany started selling watches in 1847. In 1854 Tiffany had a special relationship with Patek Philippe since Tiffany was the first retailer in America to carry the exclusive timepieces. In 1868 Tiffany created the split-seconds Tiffany Timer, used for engineering and scientific purposes. In 1874 the brand built its own factory in Geneva to make its own timepieces. The building was later sold to Patek Philippe. By the end of the century, Tiffany had become a famous jeweler and watchmaker all around the world. In 1903 George Kunz, Tiffany’s chief gemologist, created a luminescent green paint which made hands and numerals luminescent. During the 1920s and the 1930s, Tiffany created Art Deco wristwatches for ladies. A Tiffany gold calendar watch was given to U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945 as a birthday gift. In the 1980s, Tiffany & Co. introduced the Atlas wristwatch with Roman-numeral markers in high relief on the bezel. A few years later, in 1995, Tiffany unveiled a full Atlas collection both for men and women. Today, the Swiss made CT60 collection (CT standing for Charles Tiffany), marks the return of Tiffany to Switzerland although watches still are designed in New York.
