Nomos was founded in January 1990 by Roland Schwertner, a photographer and computer geek without any watch experience. Nomos lanched its first collection in 1991. This first collection featured icons like the Orion, Ludwig, Tetra and Tangente, which are still today available in Nomos’ collection. Nomos watches were classic, gender-neutral and elegant watches. The inspiration comes from Bauhaus watches of the 1930’s like the Stowa Antea. From 1992 to 2005 Nomos used to have ETA or Peseux movements. In 2005 the brand released their first watch with an in-house calibre: the Tangomat. Since more than 50% of the the watchmaking process was done in Glashütte, Nomos joined the small family of Glashütte manufacturers. The Nomos Epsilon was the first self-winding movement (Tangomat) and the Nomos Alpha (Tangente) was the first manual movement. In 2014 the brand announced the Nomos Swing System which was a completely in-house escapement. Nomos can be considered as the only true independent manufacture making accessible watches today.
