Junghans was founded in Schramberg, Germany in 1861. At that time the brand was called “Junghans and Tobler”. Erhard Junghans and Jakob Zeller-Tobler produced watch components like wooden cases, hands and pendulums. The first watches were released by the brand in 1866. When Erhard Junghans died, his wife and his two sons took the company over. Arthur Junghans, one of Erhard’s son, took inspiration from the USA where he went several times. Most of the time, Junghans watches were cheaper than their competitors’ so Junghans watches were highly appreciated. Junghans’ trademark (the star) was created in 1888 as a 5-point star and then turned into an 8-point one in 1890. The same year, the brand introduced the Calibre 10 which remained unchanged for 50 years. In 1803 the brand was the world’s largest watch factory (more than 3 million watches produced each year). In 1946 the brand introduced their first chronograph wristwatch, the J88. The J-series movement (produced by Junghans) was considered as one of the best movements in the 1950’s. In 1956 the brand started working with Swiss artist Max Bill who quickly created timeless icons. Junghans also invented the first German quartz watch, the Astro-Quartz. At that time the brand focused on quarts movements and stopped manufacturing mechanical movements. In 2000 Junghans was purchased by EganaGoldpfeil Holding and watch expert Heinz W. Pfeifer and the brand took a new direction. The brand focused on mechanical watches and sticked to the motto “From Tradition to Future”. In 2006/7 the brand launched the Meister collection with mechanical movements. Today the Max Bill collection remains very famous and appreciated by watch connoisseurs.
